Patrick Heron Prints for Sale

Patrick Heron (1920-99) is best known for his vividly coloured abstract paintings and prints. Inspired by the French painters Henri Matisse, Cezanne and Georges Braque, he turned to abstraction in his mid-30s under the influence of Abstract Expressionism, in particular the Colour Field Painting style popularized by Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman.
Born in Leeds and moving to Cornwall, then Welwyn Garden City as a child, Heron spent his teenage years creating fabric designs for the family garment business, Cresta Silks. As a conscientious objector during the war, he returned to Cornwall to work for ceramicist, Bernard Leach where he met many leading artists of the St Ives School, including Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson. Heron eventually moved to Cornwall permanently in 1956 and remained there until his death in 1999. He was also one of the best known art critics of the post-war period.
Heron’s permanent move to Cornwall, also coincided with with his commitment to non-figurative painting and he used his garden as a major source of inspiration. ‘Red Garden’ may have been Heron’s first editioned print having previously made monotypes and scarf designs. He made it at Bath Academy of Art, Somerset under the supervision of lithography expert Henry Cliffe.
Heron often took his colourful Abstract Expressionism into print, using screen-print and lithography to make wonderful vibrant prints. He has had several retrospective exhibitions including Wakefield City Art Gallery (1952); the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford (1968); Whitechapel Art Gallery (1972); Barbican Art Gallery (1985); and Tate Britain (1998). There is going to be another big retrospective at the Tate St Ives in May to September 2018.
Paintings and prints by Patrick Heron can be seen in many of the best art museums around the world, including: British Museum, Tate Gallery, Victoria & Albert Museum and Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.
