LS LOWRY The Cart  (1972)

SOLD Get an Email Alert if it's listed again

Original offset lithograph in colours on fine wove paper. Signed LS Lowry in pencil lower right and stamp numbered from the limited edition of 850 lower left. Printed in Austria by Max Jaffe and published by the Fine Art Trade Guild with their blindstamp. Image size: 495mm x 400mm.

In very good condition with very pale discolouration around the image, otherwise with nice strong, fresh colours. Provenance: comes with a 1973 gallery purchase receipt from Dearden's Fine Art, Margate. Executed after the 1959 painting of the same name, we think The Cart is one of Lowry's best and most poignant images. An extremely rare and beautiful signed print by this ever-collectable modern British artist.

Lowry's scenes are often steeped in ambiguity, and as in The Cart are deliberately vague in their titling. Decoding these pictures may be key to their appeal to us but as Lowry insisted, conclusions are best avoided; "I'm not trying to say anything. I have no message at all – it's simply my way of looking at things" (Shelly Rohde, L.S. Lowry, A Life, 2007, Haus, London).
