Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson (1889-1946) was born in London and studied at the Slade School of Art under Henry Tonks and alongside Stanley Spencer and Mark Gertler. He was a painter and printmaker
He was appointed official war artist in 1917 having witnessed the horrors of war in the Friends Ambulance Unit at the beginning of the war and in the Royal Army Medical Corps. His style gradually changed from Futurism and Cubism to a more ‘realistic’ style during these years
He had a large successful exhibition in New York in 1919 at the Frederick Keppel & Co Gallery. New York made a big impression on him and he made a number of artworks depicting the city's architecture
He worked for the RAF in the 2nd world war and produced some extraordinary paintings and prints portraying war in the sky.
