Keith Haring Prints for Sale

Born in 1958 in Reading, Pennsylvania, Keith Haring is best known for his contributions to the New York City art scene in the 1980s. His graffiti-inspired artwork depicted simplified people, dogs, babies, hearts, and flying saucers

As a child, Haring was fascinated by the cartoon art of Walt Disney and Charles Schultz and the illustrations of Dr. Seuss. He spent many hours drawing with his father, an engineer whose hobby was cartooning

He moved to New York City in 1978 and began using the city as his canvas, making chalk drawings in subway stations. His pop art (or Street Art) and graffiti-like work grew out of the New York City street culture of the 1980s.  NY was home to a thriving underground art scene and Haring befriended fellow emerging artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Kenny Scharf, who shared his interest in the colorful and transgressive graffiti art of the city's streets. Haring and these other artists organized exhibitions at downtown nightclubs and other alternative locations, where art, music and fashion all came together in a dynamic mix. Much of his work includes sexual allusions that turned into social activism. His art was eventually seen everywhere from public murals and nightclubs to galleries and museums around the world

In addition to being impressed by the innovation and energy of his contemporaries, Haring was also inspired by the work of Jean Dubuffet, Pierre Alechinsky, William Burroughs, Brion Gysin and Robert Henri's manifesto The Art Spirit which asserted the fundamental independence of the artist

Haring was passionate about AIDS awareness and prevention, and loved working with children to create collaborative murals. During his life, Haring led art workshops for kids in museums and schools around the world

Keith Haring died of AIDS-related complications at the age of 31 on February 16, 1990. Since his death he has been the subject of several international retrospectives
