Boyce's discovery of a photograph of four concrete trees made by the French artists Joël and Jan Martel in for the famous exhibition of decorative arts held in Paris in 1925 has become the defining point for the future development of his artistic output. He has since gone on to create his own versions of these modernist sculptures, identifiable in his installation based-work. A further derivative of the Martels' cubist-inspired interpretations of nature is a grid template from which Boyce formed his own modernist typography. These angular letters feature often in his work and allow Boyce to cultivate his interest in language and narrative. The text in this print is a reference to other works by Boyce - trees constructed from fluorescent tube lighting
