Takashi Murakami is a painter, printmaker and sculptor. He was brought up in Tokyo  where he trained initially as an animator at Tokyo University of Arts and afterwards as a traditional Japanese painter. He is inspired by his love of anime and manga and later became influenced by western artists such as, Anselm Keifer and Jeff Koons. He set up a production workshop in 1996, the Hiropon Factory so that he could work on a much larger scale and using a greater range of media

He coined the phrase ’Superflat’ to describe his work using 2D imagery influenced by anime and Japanese art history with emphasis on his use of flat expanses of colour and psychedelic motifs. He also uses the term ‘superflat’ to describe the levelling of cultural differences, for example, selling his ‘high-art’ works as merchandise available as toys and t-shirts at affordable prices.

Takashi’s prints are fresh, colourful and desirable, but often with more thought provoking undertones.
