William SCOTT Untitled (from Rothko Portfolio)  (1973)
Lithograph on wove paper, signed in pencil and numbered form the limited edition of 75 (there were also 15 artist's proofs), from the Mark Rothko Memorial Portfolio. Printed by Curwen Studio and published by Matthews, Miller & Dunbar for the Mark Rothko Memorial Trust. Referenced in Archeus, 47. Printed to the top sheet edge, as issued. In excellent condition and never framed. A tiny bend to top right corner, and a tiny mark top right at the edge of the image, probably done at time of printing, but absolutely suitable for float framing if desired. A stunning and rare abstract still life, immediately recognisable with its bold, simplified black and white shapes against a beautiful yellow ochre
Shortly after Mark Rothko’s tragic death in 1970, a Trust was established to facilitate travel bursaries for UK artists to make their first trip to the USA. Funds were raised largely from the sale of this portfolio comprising prints by 13 British artists, including Patrick Caulfield, Bridget Riley, Henry Moore, Victor Pasmore and Patrick Heron
